his seminary training. Joseph had a quartz round stone that he used as a "scrying stone" and would go around the western part of New York State offering to water witch for people. He would invariably tell them to dig about 14-20' down for water. In that area of NYS, that's about where the water table is, so he was always right. His bag of "golden tablets" was looked into one night when he was passed out drunk and found to be nothing more than a bag of rocks. Con man.
