Good political ads could turn this issue to Democrats’ favor. The Texas law is draconian because it forces women and girls to bear the babies of their rapists—often young girls of school age having to drop out of school to take care of a child when she is just a child and too young even to work. Anti-abortionists would just say that the baby can be put up for adoption, but the focus should be on the physical and emotional trauma of a 12-year-old being forced to have a baby.

Other women who are harmed are women who are pregnant and learn they have cancer. The majority choose abortion so they can be treated for cancer and try for another pregnancy later, but Texas has now removed that option. Unless the abortion is an emergency procedure to save the life of the woman, it is now illegal. For example, removing the fetal cells from the fallopian tube would be legal as it’s an emergency under the law because if the fallopian tube bursts, the woman can bleed to death. In addition, the pregnancy is not viable from the beginning.

We need to focus on the human stories and abortion as a part of overall healthcare because that’s exactly what it is. Abortion does save lives.
