intellectuals...are pretentious, conceited... and snobbish; and very likely immoral, dangerous, and subversive ... The plain sense of the common man is an altogether adequate substitute for, if not actually much superior to, formal knowledge and expertise.

I was assigned this book in freshman history when I went to college. That book has stuck with me ever since. This except (which I got from Wikipedia), in my mind, is a fair summary of what is going on today as well as the past forty years.

However, unlike, for example "trickle-down economics," this attitude is directly harming them. I guess it's to be seen if they will adapt or will Covid adapt to their further detriment.
