He was lucky to survive it. He got it from his mom, who was ashamed to tell him that she had it, and so she didn't. He didn't take precautions around her because he had no way of knowing that things were any different with her.

He recovered, but he said he was so weak afterward that he had to rest halfway to the bathroom, and needed a stool in the shower because he couldn't stand up for more than a few seconds at a time for weeks after being pronounced well enough to leave the hospital.
