(31,530 posts)just "horse dewormer"...
It can also be used on other livestock.
Actually, seriously, ivermectin (human dosage and usually injected), has been called a miracle drug in treating parasites around the world... a "wonder drug" that has saved and improved the lives of millions of people.
Was it effective in treating Covid-19... no. But we shouldn't stop searching for cheap treatments for this pandemic. The sad truth is that we ( the human race ) will never get out of the pandemic through inoculation... at least for many many years if it happens at all. The virus is too infectious and spreads in aerosols and it mutates faster than we can vaccinate.
So we are going to need treatments to help save lives. The antibody treatment drugs do seem to work, but they are very expensive and come to the market too slowly.
I think we should fund more studies on any and all treatments which are already in the marketplace and which are relatively inexpensive. Otherwise humanity is going to be in for a very long slog of things... and there WILL be a variant that will evade our vaccines... probably sooner rather than later. It means we will all be getting Covid shots for years to come as the drug companies and CDC/WHO scientists race to create (easy part now), test ( still a long process ) manufacture (this is very difficult) and distribute (almost impossible) new vaccines to prevent new variants from putting millions into hospitals and graves.
We can't let the right make this into a political issue more than they have... we must be driven by science and data.
So... hydroxychloroquine (malaria treatment) and Ivermectin (parasite treatment) both failed. Fine.. let's move on and keep searching... and try to motivate the ones we love to get vaccinated. And to buy vaccines for the rest of the world. All 7.5 Billion of us. But don't stop looking for effective treatments.
