(26,469 posts)areas have their share of missing people, especially women. There are two unsolved cases in my area that stayed in the news for several months, even years. Both are white women. One was partially solved when remains were found and the case went to trial. Two men involved were charged, but both denied being the actual killer. One turned state's evidence, but part of his testimony was proven to be false so the other guy was acquitted. The one who gave false testimony was convicted of perjury, but not of murder because it was not possible to prove that he did it.
The other one was a woman that I had known from work, although neither of us worked at the same place anymore at the time of her disappearance. I saw her in a supermarket and spoke with her briefly just minutes before she disappeared so her case haunts me still, several years later. The chief suspect was her estranged husband, with good reason. His possessiveness and threats to her were the reason why they were estranged. But she has never been found, so he has never been charged since prosecutors can't prove that she is dead.
She left the supermarket that day and was never seen again. There is a national forest near here and it would be the perfect place to hide a body. It has a lot of old growth trees and hundreds of acres that are seldom if ever seen by human beings. My guess is that the husband killed her and hid the body there. He is, or was at the time, an outdoorsman more familiar with the forested area than most people.
