(24,906 posts)what I never had. My wife uses it, for many of the same reasons as you, Peggy, and it doesn't bother me at all. She also does genealogy and it's a valuable tool in that area.
This time one year ago I had the civic privilege of serving on a jury on a murder trial. The defendant and his victim were both deaf, as were most of the witnesses. The whole trial was conducted with sign language interpreters. I learned a great deal about the deaf community during those weeks.
Things like Facebook, the internet in general and cell phones with texting have been a life changer for deaf people. It multiplied their communication capabilities exponentially. Both with other deaf people and people who hear. Think about it. half the people in this thread could be deaf and we wouldn't even have to know it. We would still be communicating on an equal basis.
It would be devastating to the deaf to lose Facebook and other sites like it.
By the way, he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. It was basically self defense gone overboard. With time served awaiting trial and time off for good behavior he is already out of jail.
