(5,047 posts)I live overseas and if my sister-in-law didn't post on Facebook daily my relationships with my nieces would basically just be exchanging Christmas and birthday presents.
My brother is hopeless about remembering to call and email people and my sister-in-law has a ginormous family so it's just not practical to expect them to keep up regular bespoke communications for each person in the family. But with Facebook it's easy to check in and see videos of music recitals, camping trips, etc.
Other than that, I pretty much never use Facebook and certainly wouldn't rely on getting my news or any other information there.
At the end of the day you do control what information goes on there and what doesn't and what information you choose to consume from there.
If they had better moderation and stronger policies about shutting down fake troll accounts it would be fine.
