(10,258 posts)am not a native Texan but I was transferred here (Houston) in '74 at the age of 24 and at the time I thought it was a wonderful place. I noticed things changing after Reagan got elected in '80. Not that dramatic but people began to take sides based in politics. I think the entire country began shifting around that time.
I noticed a pretty dramatic shift in the late '80s or early '90s. The GOP "Contract with America" brought about a big divide. Family values, Religious superiority, a general "Holier than thou" attitude permeated work and even friendships. Then along came George "W" Bush who defeated Ann Richards and the urban/rural divide began to really become a dominant topic. It was a real shitshow that affected young and old alike. After that we saw the emergence of Rick Perry and the shitkicker mentality permeated Texas politics ever since. That is were we eventually got Abbott, Cornyn, Cruz, Paxton, and a boatload of "Louie Gohmert" like characters everywhere.
By the time my DW and I were in our middle 40's (around 94/95) it sucked.
It has gotten even worse since then. I truly wish I had left the state then but my DW family is all here and we thought it would improve.....wrong.
Now it feels like we are living in the "Twilight Zone" but it is not just Texas (maybe never was).
We feel your pain....you are not alone...don't give up....surely at some point things will improve?
Peace and Love!
