21. My neighborhood would be her worst nightmare.

English isn't the primary language spoken at home for about 40% of the school kids here. It's not the primary language at the local Walmart.

The kids next door to us are trilingual. They can talk to all of their grandparents. At school they are fluent English speakers. That's always been the way it is in the U.S.A.. The grandchildren speak English.

Our immediate neighbors, and my wife, are all at least bilingual. I'm the odd white monolingual out.

My wife's parents were born in the U.S.A. to immigrants.

About a quarter of her ancestors were Native to what's now the U.S.A. Southwest and were forced out of their homelands into Mexico when their lands were annexed by the U.S.A.. They later returned as "immigrants." One of my wife's grandmothers was resentful of that. She had her green card but she never sought citizenship. She was a fiercely proud woman.

My father-in-law was born in a farm worker camp near a small farm my parents used to own.

I grew up in places that were 99% white. My wife and I made a very deliberate decision not to live or raise our children in a place like that.
