It was hair-raising as a chronicle of family abuse, but then you were left with the impression he had risen above all that.

Of late I’ve concluded he really didn’t rise above his sad origins (except in the sense that he got a good education and made money). His decision to embrace Trumpism is just just — well, deplorable.
