(114,904 posts)for one thing, JSmith isn't hidden in the mists of the ancient. He's a figure from the 19th century and it's not supposition that he was a con man; it's documented. Secondly, there are no great Mormon texts. You will never study The Book of Mormon as great literature. There are, that I have seen, no bits of great or original philosophy as there are in, for instance, The Old Testament, the New Testament and the Koran.
Most main stream protestant churches don't practice the kind of "magic" that Mormons do. They believe that there is a heaven, but they don't encourage belief in planets that men rule over. Heaven, in fact, in most mainstream Christian religions, is a vague notion and the focus isn't on domination in heaven as it is in Mormonism. The rituals in Mormonism are far more elaborate and heightened. The secrecy is greater.
There's a lot more, but those are significant.
