When I finally learned the story of Moses, I laughed my ass off in exactly the same way I laughed at the story of Joseph Smith. And Mohammed, for that matter. They're basically the same story, and the same con, and I still can't believe people were so gullible as to fall for it when done right in front of them.
As for great writing, I've read the Bible. Let's be honest-- apart from a couple of choice sections like the Song of Songs, the Bible is not great literature. It's a fractured collection of self-contradictory Bronze Age scriblings, and that's exactly what most of it reads like. I haven't read the Book of Mormon, but I can't imagine it's any more nonsensical or boring than the Bible.
I also don't see any real difference between Mormon magic and mainstream Christian magic. Protestant churches seem to be more toned down in *style*, but the substance is no different. And if we compare it to a flavor of Christianity like Catholicism, I can't even see a difference in style.
