Perhaps because this was a deliberate attempt at cover-up. If you read earlier reports, he was painted as a violent criminal.
Just look at this report.
Note that it says he was wanted in a police shooting. Not that he pulled a gun on the cop. When it comes to police shootings, the media needs to stop buying the police version of events without doing their own investigation.

I believe it was the protests last summer that lead to more attention to this case and a new push to investigate.
