(4,847 posts)they seem reasonable; however, i really don't know how far they'd go in obedience to the church. the closer you are to SLC, the more the church dictates your life. i lived in utah for over eight years and the church does play a strong role in utah governance.
what i have read (because hubby and I wanted to understand the church) is that smith's family may have been boondogglers. he was married to emma hale who had numerous miscarriages (maybe that's why he came up with the polygamy thing). even though they come off as victims, the church has a lot of blood on it's hands (of course, so does the catholic church), including my cousin's great grandfather who was murdered by mormons. in the early days, no one was to question church doctrine, by doing so, you could find yourself in a hole outside of SLC.
i hadn't heard of the shocking oath against the US; however, i have heard that gentiles may be shorn like sheep, lied to or whatever because they are not worthy and well, are gentiles. even members' of the church must be deemed worthy; of course, one wonders who has the illustrious decision to decide that.
i also didn't realize that smith tweaked the OT. i learned that recently while debating someone of the mormon persuasion. in smith's version, lot didn't offer his daughters to the multitude, didn't bother to find the other variations of the OT
i have no problem with their polytheistic tendencies; however, I do have a problem of a church swearing an oath against the government, wanting to change the government to their ideological perceptions and not respecting ALL citizens and their beliefs.
