Salon's generally a factually reliable source, this basically also reports that this candidate is alleging this. Salon's story is full of "alleges" and "claims."

I googled this morning looking for investigative media with editorial processes that might have finished checking this out, but none then. But note that media known for responsible journalism didn't publish this RW politician's claim as an allegation because, even if it didn't violate their ethics, it would confer unearned importance and credibility coming from them.

I like these intriguing things, I really do, but too often they just don't pan out.
