In its defense, the bizarre stories and beliefs of the Bible (OT and NT) were written at a time when people really had no way of knowing any differently.
If you have no scientific explanation for why crops live or die, it might make sense to imagine/hope for a deity to control them, and then give sacrifices to that deity.
If you don't know anything about geology or evolution, theorizing that a deity created a man and a woman makes as much sense as anything else.
After 100s of years, these beliefs were too enmeshed with culture itself to disappear or diminish despite decreasing relevance.
Mormonism didn't arise in a culture from a collection of such beliefs; it was created whole-cloth by a huckster who wanted power and access to young women, and who knew how to use promises of magical rituals and an afterlife to pull people in. In that respect, it's definitely in the same category with Scientology and the Moonies.
