Their refusal to cooperate and determination to keep things hidden is multiple GLARING red light and shrieking sirens alerting that they’ve got more than a few bad things to hide. Maybe VERY bad things.

The old retort “well, if you haven’t done anything wrong, you should have nothing to worry about, ‘eh?” certainly comes to mind here.
