They run the internal demographic polling and correlate it with the revenue demographics and go from there.

NBA determined that portraying the verdict as an endorsement of vigilantism rather than self defense yielded the most profit. NFL and NBA determined that ignoring it entirely was best for their profits.

NBA also determined that going along with the wishes of the Chinese government is good for their future profit there.
