I sincerely believed we would be seeing very little of both families. For the most part, that's how it worked out.

Back then, it felt like racism was a generational thing. There is almost fifteen years between my husband and his next sibling. Most of us thought the "old guys" would just die off and we would be rid of this racist business. How wrong we all were.

And I assume that my husband wouldn't speak up against his family members, anymore than I could kiss off my own mother. Distance seemed to alleviate the problem for both of us.

It really got bad in the nineties when the right-wing hate screed began to surface. I eventually broke from the family gatherings. And, eventually, my husband did as well. We are only now regrouping, because his eldest brother died. Time is running out for all of us. We are better at staying away from the kind of conversations that would set me off.
