Who was fixated on selvege, alone, as the gold standard.

I am talking about selvedge denim.

Selvege simply means that it has a woven edge running parallel to the ends of the bolt of fabric, as opposed to a cut edge - which is the standard for most of even the cheapest fabrics.

Anyone who has ever used a pattern, or bought fabric from a bolt of fabric knows this.

Selvege denim can be high quality - or cheap. It is not the presence of selvege edges that determins the quality of the fabric.
