But, if the gun fired and it didn't malfunction, then he pulled the trigger. Or he could have pulled the hammer back and released it before it was fully cocked. Either way, he fired the gun.

If a single action revolver is fully cocked, you have to pull the trigger to drop the hammer.

Colt SAA revolvers (the typical Western six-shooter used in movies) have trigger guards.
