(1,033 posts)Then I guess the use of any term is defensible if we claim it's a part of our culture that others will never understand or appreciate.
At this point, it's not even about our opinions on Oprah or the term "heifer". I'm talking about using the "you're not one of us" defense to justify accepted behavior or beliefs within your culture.
As an example, the Mayor-Elect of NYC recently faced criticism for telling the NYC Council they could only question his position on solitary confinement when they've served 22 years in law enforcement like he had. As far as he's concerned, the matter of incarceration is strictly a law enforcement matter that outsiders should keep their noses out of.
I could find countless other examples.
Tl;dr people who aren't a part of your culture or in-group have the right to criticize it.
