This is nothing new. One thing couples must agree to before a Catholic marriage is being open to children from that marriage. Catholic doctrine has always said procreation is the main reason for marriage.
People are free to take what is of use to them in terms of dogma and doctrine, and chuck the rest. Many, if not most, Catholics do just that.
