(43,049 posts)refused to believe they lost the Civil War or northern cities like Chicago, Newark or New York ran things.
Did you know that at one time in Boston you brought your ballot from home to the poll. The ballots were color coded, and God help you if you had the wrong color.
During WWII, and to a lesser extent WWI Atlantic City refused to turn its lights out and became the perfect background for German subs to take out shipping.
During the 1918 flu pandemic, which was also during a war, masks and other sensible provisions were about as hated and ignored as now.
We lost over 300 local newspapers in NYC alone as Father Coughlin ruled the radio airwaves. Coughlin was shut down btw.
And John D Rockefeller became our first billionaire selling just kerosene. Meanwhile, Hearst got us into the Spanish American War before there was even radio.
We survived all that, and a huge drought and Depression with politicians even more craven than they are now.
Things are perhaps worse than a hundred years ago, but who says we can't survive this?
