Most of them are saying that what we are seeing now looks very familiar to them.. The Holocaust Museum has lots of stateemts, including some from now deceased survivors who made the statements while yet living.

The worst I have lived through personally was McCarthy (not Kevin byt Joe) and his ilk, including the HUAC. I can assure you, otherwise sane people were terrified - terrified of doing something, or of having been thought to have done something, that might look bad in there "permanent record" (which didn't actually exist then - what with the internet, it probably does now.) I certainly have no reason to disbelieve survivors who have seen it all before.
