Another Republican holy roller has chimed in on the issue of rape with the usual wide-eyed confusion over the fallout his remarks has created.

No, it’s not the right Rep. Todd Akin (Mysogynist/MO) with his insensitive idiocies about “legitimate rape” or Wisconsin state rep Roger Rivard and his assessment of girls who are “easy to rape,” now it’s senate hopeful Richard Mourdock of Indiana who claims that rape is something God intended to happen. Or at least, pregnancies that result from this horrific crime.

The Guardian UK reports: “Republican Richard Mourdock, running for the US Senate in Indiana, made the comments during a debate with Democrat Joe Donnelly and others on Tuesday: ‘I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God,’ Mourdock said. ‘And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.’ Mitt Romney had endorsed Mourdock in a television advert just two days earlier, making the comments particularly embarrassing.”

But of course! Uber-Mormon Mittens has never clearly stated his ever-changing position on abortion, so endorsing a Rapture Rightie who believes God wants rape victims to have these babies fits in with his belief system. Or not. Who can tell?

What if the victim is, say, twelve? Still a gift from the Lord? What is it with self-proclaimed “good christian” Neocons and their insistence on adding qualifies to this most heinous, violent crime? Are they aware that men can be rape victims, too? And children?

Again we ponder, where is the compassion in these conservatives? And what, God help us all, fresh hell would a Romney/Ryan administration bring for women? For any of us?
