(3,835 posts)When you peel back the grievance, gun worship, entitlement, and racism, I see people who feel like they do not have the ability to navigate a modern world of diversity and rapid change. They struggle to claim whatever power they can hold on to. Often, that power projection takes the form of petty assholery as demonstrated by the truck driver. Like a two year-old who won't eat her vegetables, the rebellion takes the form of a meltdown at WallMart about wearing a mask.
Has it always been this way? Do other countries do a better job of instilling value to folks who work in the service industry or the trades?
Diversity models recognize that when we interact with people of different cultures and races, all sides gain valuable insight. By segregating citizens by class, education level, and income in EVERTHING WE DO, we devalue the human capital each can bring to a healthy society. If a doctor shares a beer with a truck driver, each can learn from their life experiences. Both may share interests in the joys of parenthood, music, nature, and favorite foods.
Since they rarely talk to each other, those opportunities to enrich their lives are lost. The doctor stays smug about her intellectual and financial achievements while complaining to peers about the rude truck driver. The driver soaks up his view of the world from right-wing radio...Listening to how the elites are targeting his last vestiges of power. He feels cornered. The driver lashes out...like the two-year old throwing her peas on the floor.
