the EU encouraged drivers to get diesel vehicles instead of gasoline because of greater fuel efficiency in the late 90's/early 2000's, but turns out diesels are more polluting and are a significant source of PM2.5 particles. Obama encouraged a shift to natural gas instead of coal because it was "cleaner"; turns out all that fracking has released a HUGE amount of methane, which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, and sped up climate change to the point where we're seeing things that weren't expected until 2050. Turns out that acting on incomplete information has unintended consequences.
