some republicans retired early from political office during the Trump years. Either they couldn't compromise THAT much or they had issues they couldn't afford to be made public.

Sadly, being a decent person with principles doesn't get one far in the republican party these days. I remember Jeff Flake's impressive and emotional speech on the senate floor, but most republicans just blew it off. Being a republican and having genuine principles just doesn't work anymore. Look at Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. I disagree with them on almost everything, but at least they are loyal to the country they serve. They got thrown under the bus by fellow republicans.

The republican party needs to die. It is too late to salvage it.
