Complaint Category: Advertisement misrepresented a service
Complaint: The company uses envelope and card that appears to be from the government. Misleads the customer, who is unfamiliar with these types of advertising.
This document was received by my mother, who is elderly, on Monday, October 19, 2009. She gave it to me, stating that she was not sure what it was about, but that it "was from the government." I looked it over and was angered by such a misleading advertising, using an envelope that is normally used by the government and using the term "GOVERNMENT", "Social Security", "REGISTERED DOCUMENT", and "DO NOT DISCARD: Important Information about your government benefits*". I am still trying to figure out what the asterisk at the end of the words "benefits*" is referring to. The indication of that this is not a government agency is written in very small print at the very bottom of the card. My concern is that unsuspecting senior citizens are being misled by this company's use of materials and the presentation of the service they are sneakily providing. If it was able to mislead my mother, it will surely mislead other seniors, unknowingly, who do not have another family member to look over misleading advertising such as this. I am angered that this company would use the elderly as a target market for such advertising practices. They apparently did their research into how to mislead seniors by using envelopes that appear to be from the government. Information Processing Center was sure thinking of the most effective way to get a senior citizen to open and reply. I am very angered and saddened as to how many seniors will be responding, believing that this was sent by the government.
Business Response
It is not our objective to deceive anyone with our advertising. We also did not create this envelope/advertisement to take advantage of our nations financial status or the federal governments involvement. We have used the same ad/envelope for many years and have been able to assist thousands of clients in obtaining the valuable insurance protection they needed. If your mother had responded she would have been informed about specific products available to her and what it would cost. I welcome any suggestions you may have that will help us reach the individuals who need our services.
Complaint Resolution: Company addressed the complaint issues. The consumer failed to acknowledge acceptance to BBB.
