and support through sales gimmicks rather than actual effective governing.

I remember Congressman Joe Walsh from Illinois, a perfect example of a know-nothing politician. He had failed at every venture he'd tried and owed over $100,000 in back child support, so he ran for Congress, truly the last refuge of scoundrels, con artists, and grifters. Unlike many of the opportunists we've seen recently, he only lasted one term, and then pursued a career in radio. Just can't find his niche and probably never will.
