(9,131 posts)have laws against "convoying". I don't know about DC. These laws talk about violations if you organize vehicles purposely in such a way as to impede the normal flow of traffic. Obvious application to these nutters. Also there are Federal statutes about purposely interfering with interstate commerce. Purposely slowing down/impeding other trucks simply trying to do their job would fall under those statutes. Obviously organizing to obstruct traffic is also a safety issue. Emergency vehicles have a hard enough time getting through normal traffic in a quick manner let alone when people are purposely clogging the roads.
Also there are clear laws about "following distance" and the gap required between vehicles is fairly substantial. Some states specify distances and some leave it to the discretion of police. A few states post signs and some even paint dots on the road indicating the distance to keep apart. At highway speeds it is always a truck length or so. Cops have written many tickets over the years for "tail-gating", "unsafe operation" etc. and if they have the political will they can do so again. They should have the political will or we should find police administrators who do.
