For republicans, political office is an opportunity to exploit and enrich oneself. In recent years, republican presidential primaries have been hysterical as every clown and snake oil salesman hops onboard the grifter train.

They all have something to sell (Gingrich and Huckabee - books and tapes) and what better way to get free publicity. I'm not sure what Herman Cain was selling, but like so many, he was not a serious candidate. And Ben Carson? That was just weird. He did end up as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, but I don't think that was his initial objective.

I guess politics truly does make strange bedfellows and if you are a republican, stranger still.
