Full disclosure: my wife and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary less than a month later. We were trying to think of a good place to do it. We're kind of spread out, with us in Düsseldorf, one daughter in Frankfurt and the other in New York City. I was, romantic that I am, thinking of the Seychelles. We haven't been there since 1980. But our daughter in NYC just got her first child last April, and we couldn't bring ourselves to ask her to make THAT kind of a trip with a 1 year old. Our younger daughter had gone to school on the Big Island of Hawai'i for two years, and suggested that. We said it was certainly something to consider. Never EVER say something that vague to a star lawyer. Next thing we knew, she had already made the reservations, booked the flights, etc. It's a pain in the ass to get to from here. An 11 hour flight to San Francisco, then immigration and customs, and then another six hour flight to Kona. It's twelve time zones from here--exactly halfway around the world. Any farther, and we start to come back from the other direction.
But what the hell, we're only gonna have one 40th anniversary, and with my genetics, the chances of 50 are iffy at best. We met eight years before we got married, so this is really closer to 50 than 40 anyway, right?
All that is to say--I'll be around until April 8th.
