Thank you. My violin teacher (back in the day) was in the orchestra. He said most of the judges were from Russia or Eastern Bloc countries. It was “understood” that a Russian would win this competition. Van Cliburn came in & blew them all away. Finally the judges asked Khrushchev if they could give him the first prize. Khrushchev said, “Is he the best?” They said he was, and that was that. Even at the height of the Cold War, music could play a diplomatic role. Sadly, music will not do much to change what is happening now in Ukraine. Oh how I wish it could.
