There are two big brands of aviation piston engines, Lycoming and Continental. When he bought this plane, it had a Continental engine with red valve covers. On the day he crashed it, it had a Lycoming that someone had painted the valve covers red with spray paint. You don’t just change engine brands on a certified aircraft; you need to file a supplemental type certificate for it, and that takes some doing. The pilots on YT think he changed it himself, which is really illegal; there are 23 maintenance tasks an owner-pilot is allowed to do himself, and engine swaps are not on the list. (Things like changing oil and light bulbs are.)

So…he crashed a plane intentionally, he did maintenance he’s not allowed to do…if I had this guy’s address I’d send him a copy of “how to survive federal prison” off Amazon.

I saw a really good video that the FAA probably watched. Someone who owns a Taylorcraft flew it out to the place Trevor’s engine stopped running, at the altitude he was at when it happened, killed the engine and glided it to a successful dead stick landing on the creek bed below him.
