(6,115 posts)...I believe him. He doesn't make empty promises or empty threats. The man is a Constitutional scholar, and he knows what he's got and how important it is. He knows the gravity of it and he doesn't boast. HE's not a showboater.
You guys are right - the RW will shrug it off. The Left will say, "A-ha! I told you so!" What can be accomplished with public hearings is getting the independents engaged. And the old-school republicans who go along but deep down don't like what their party has become. The old-school Rs are more apt to be invested in real patriotism - not performative patriotism - and they will be appalled, from what it sounds like. These people can be convinced. Not every R is a rabid, insane, cult follower.
Lastly, the hearings HAVE to be rebroadcast in prime time like the Watergate hearings in 1973. This is far more consequential than Nixon breaking into and bugging the offices of the DNC. This is a matter of massive Constitutional laws being broken by the elected officials in charge, including a "president" to foment a coup and override an election. So they really have to put the hearings on in prime time. Even so, in 1973 there were only three channels, so you couldn't miss it. There's a hell of a lot more ways to miss the hearings now. The hearings HAVE to get out to the public.
Then, when the public is enraged, the DOJ HAS to act. Right now, Garland is cowering in fear in case someone hints that he may be political. When a good portion of the country is screaming for prosecutions after the hearings, he can't not act. And at that point it won't seem political anymore.
