he brings out the absolute worst in his cult members. He's made it acceptable, at least in some quarters, to be publicly nasty, vicious, racist, misogynistic, homophobic and otherwise awful without consequences. He represents the id of a lot of angry people, and neither he nor the attitudes he encourages can be ignored. The sorts of people who consider his attributes to be features rather than bugs have always been with us, but he's made it possible for them to hold public office and say terrible things with no shame. Maybe when he's gone for good (gods, are you listening?) it will be easier to shove the trolls back under their bridges. I don't know, but I do believe that as long as he's around and holding his mini-Nuremberg rallies he's a big, fat problem.
