He's an authoritarian who refuses any attempts at oversight and, somehow, has managed to get away with it. Want to investigate all the gangs within LASD? Tough. He won't show up. Want answers about a "deputy involved shooting"? Good luck.

The worst part is that the LA TV stations pretty much act as his PR agents. He decided he'd go out of his jurisdiction and make a big show of "cleaning up Venice," TV cameras accompanying him, of course, and completely stepped on the toes of LAPD, which actually polices Venice.

We had Lee Baca as sheriff for years. Then he ended up in prison after his felony conviction of lying to federal authorities (akin to Capone getting busted for taxes). Villanueva makes Baca look honorable.
