The Russians eventually figured it out in WW2 despite several huge disasters against the Germans that were much worse than what happened in Kyiv. (In 1941, they had 600,000 soldiers surrender when they were encircled around Kiev).

The real question is if the Russian population will go along with a long, bloody war. Given their history, I am afraid the answer is yes.
