26. "old massa treated his slaves with kindness and love"

I've never understood this particular argument to excuse or soften slavery. Okay, sure, the law of averages implies that some slaveholders treated their slaves kindly (though I would never go so far as to say "with love" ) just as some, like Delphine LaLaurie, were sadists who horrifically abused their slaves, while others were somewhere in between.

So what? A slave treated kindly is still a slave. Sure, they're better off than a slave who belonged to the LaLauries, but at the end of the day they're still a goddamn slave. It's akin to saying, "Why are you upset? Sure, I beat the living shit out of you, but at least I didn't stab you like I did the other guy. Count your blessings."
