I would recommend if anyone gets searched by a drug dog to video the handler. I would also inform them not to tap my car, direct the dog, and I would be specifically looking for the dog the check in with the handler and see if the handler cues.

Remember, the dog is offering a behavior to essentially get “paid” with their toy or food. The dog isn’t getting paid for finding drugs, they are getting paid for the signal. The trainers simply chained things together. Dogs will often skip a step because they aren’t stupid. Perfect example. Most people teach the down from a sit. Do it enough and the dog will start to skip the sit and go straight to down. They understand routine. Anyway, the dog WANTS to signal because the dog WANTS to get paid. A search with no reward is no bueno for the dog.
