(11,767 posts)The reality is that America has what would be called, an Empire. We have possessions in far off places that we administer same as the British Empire, the Spanish, and other Empires throughout history.
I think that you can legitimately call out things that American foreign policy engages in that can be imperialist, for example, the US interference in Central and South American that started under Monroe and continues to this day. The coups we helped in Iran, Brazil, Chile, etc... The arming of both Iran and Iraq in exchange for oil rights.
That said, you get a lot of co-opting and corruption of those arguments by trolls, and right wing sources who only seek to sow discord and division. You can legitimately criticize actions the US has taken, but that has nothing to do with criticisms of what other countries are doing.
The world is a complicated place. America has done, and continues to do some messed up stuff to different countries. That doesn't mean that Putin is somehow exonerated by those facts. Putin is essentially a dictator and has done equally if not more horrible things to people. The difference is that his reach is much much shorter.
