(3,575 posts)crops up in cultures all over the world, some more so than others. IMHO, misogyny is an unfortunately common pathological development in male identity and masculinity. To these men, masculinity is a kind of negation of the feminine. The biggest insult to these men is to be called a girl, usually in much more derogatory terms. They actively repress anything they deem feminine in themselves, and lash out and jeer at any feminine quality they might see in other men. Hence the prevalence of homophobia among these men, which is a reaction to the other great bugaboo of the patriarchy. Its a commonplace truism that that which is repressed on the inside and that which is oppressed politically on the outside are two sides of the same coin. During times of uncertainty and change people act reflexively and double down on their psychological defenses, and hence the rise of projection and the cult of masculinity, known as fascism.
