Josephy Smith ran in 1844 because God talked him into it. Eleven Mormons have run since, because God said a Mormon should be president.

Once you absorb that fact, everything else falls into place. It's not his job to know what he should do. His job is to become president. And obviously at any cost to facts, respect, patriotism, or honor.
