49. It's the Emily Litella schtick - remember her?

The entire joke with Gilda Radner's character "Emily Litella" is that she stupidly misunderstands a hip term or phrase. Then she goes off on a tirade against that incorrect phrase. The SNL news announcer (Chevy Chase) corrects her and says, "Emily, that's violence on TV, not violins on TV" or whatever - it was always a different phrase. Then the payoff was Emily's line, "Oh ... never mind!"

The difference of course is that Gilda realized we were all smart enough to get the joke. And she played along with us. I don't think Empty Greene is that clever. However I really think Empty Greene is playing us. She's the new Emily Litella and this is is how she "owns the libs." Otherwise nobody pays attention to her at all.
