I learned to shoot at summer camp and was on two rifle teams in my teens, camp and at school. No one carried guns anywhere, when we weren't at the range they were locked up. And we had to learn and understand specific safety rules before being allowed to pick up a gun. And one unwritten, but very strict rule, was to never shoot anything living. And the only accident I ever witnessed over the years was when the bamboo curtain that blocked off the open part of the camp range fell just as one of the older girls was preparing to shoot - and there was a series of evenly spaced holes in that curtain after that.

Everyone took gun use seriously, but that was a long time ago. The range at camp is gone now - as is the one at my former school. And when I looked at the schools that we used to compete against, not one of the has a rifle team anymore, even the military schools. Times have irrevocably changed.
