Cheney knows that Edwards and other officers endured hell in hand to hand combat for hours, which gave House and Senate members time to get to safety.
Cheney and other Congressional members were frightened by the attack, but Edwards was injured, lost consciousness, and then went back into the fight.
Officers were not able to stop the mob from getting inside, but they stalled the mob long enough to keep people inside safe.
That's what choked up Cheney.
