And in Latin, from, well, Roman times - "Cisalpine Gaul" being "Gallia Cisalpina", the area inhabited by Gauls on the same side of the Alps as the Romans (ie the Po Valley, basically), while "Transalpine Gaul" - "Gaul across the Alps" - was what is now France.
